31 Mar Escape to Mattituck
It brings us great pleasure to share the many towns that make the North Fork a go-to destination. With Spring here, there’s no better time to start planning a vineyard day trip or weekend on Long Island’s East End. There’s one town in particular you should keep on your radar. It offers a variety of vineyards, a local cheese shop, and a restaurant that serves food made with love.
Mattituck is a hamlet and census-designated place in Suffolk County. As of 2010, the population was 4,219. The town is host to an annual strawberry festival, held over Father’s Day Weekend, and is located in the heart of over 30 vineyards in the Long Island wine region. So start planning your visit to some of these great places.
Harbes Family Farm
In 1978, two high school sweethearts (Ed & Monica Harbes) married young and decided to try their hand at life on the farm. Ed learned everything there was to know from his father who taught him the secrets of farming acquired over 13 generations out on the East End. Equipped with a new corn planter, a bag of seeds, and the support of his wife and children, the Harbes Family Farm Stand opened. The farm offers attractions such as the barnyard adventure which includes pig races, singing hayrides, and an elaborate and exciting corn maze (pictured above). They also offer tastings and a wonderful farm stand. All will be open daily from 9am-6pm beginning Mother’s Day Weekend.
